Butterfly Release

We had our first successful butterfly release today! Ms. Tafoya found Monarch butterfly eggs on the zizotes milkweed that is located in the athletic fields at Bailey Middle School several weeks ago. Since this is a high traffic area, she brought the eggs and harvest stalks of milkweed into the classroom. After several weeks, the Monarch butterfly hatched, and today she and her students released it into our butterfly garden! Check out the video below (although if you blink, you'll miss it!).
We're also excited to find more Monarch caterpillars in the "Milkweed Mile" of our butterfly garden. Last fall, NPA Club members rescued milkweed plants from the athletic fields and transplanted them along the fenceline of our protected NPA Nursery area. The plants died back (milkweed does not like being transplanted), but several came back in the spring thanks to all the delicious rain we've been having. Now we've got caterpillars munching away on the milkweed plants!
